Mangaluru: Of the seven former mayors who contested in the MCC elections on November 12, only Bhaskar K, Jacintha Vijay Alfred and Shashidhar Hegde emerged victorious, as per the results declared on Thursday, November 14. Congress leader Harinath is among those who tasted defeat this time.

It can be recalled that a total of seven former mayors – Harinath, M Shashidhar Hegde, Jacintha Vijay Alfred, Abdul Aziz, Ashraf K, Gulzar Banu and Bhaskar K – were in the fray for the Mangaluru City Corporation election. While veteran Congress leader Harinath contested in the Derebail ward, Jacintha contested from the Falnir ward, Abdul Aziz from the Padavu Central ward and Bhaskar K contested from the Padavu East ward.

For Harinath, this is his second defeat out of a total of seven elections in which he has contested during his political career.

Shashidhar Hegde and Jacintha Afred, both belonging to the Congress cadre, have each contested for the fifth time and won in their respective wards. Abdul Aziz and Bhaskar K, both also from the Congress party, have contested for the forth time. However, Abdul Aziz lost in the Padavu Central ward, while Bhaskar K won in the Padavu East ward.

Gulzar Banu, who contested as an indpendent candidate after having been denied a ticket from the Congress party, was able to secure a mere 86 votes. Surprisingly, another independent candidate Mishriya, from the same ward, bagged a total of 934 votes.

Another former mayor, Ashraf K also tasted defeat after contesting from the Port ward (Ward No 45). He was able to get only 252 votes.
