Mangaluru: Those who live along the coastal belts tend to take beaches for granted. They can just hop in their cars whenever they feel like it and drive down to the beach and chill. Beaches are a soothing break from the mundane. The sea breeze in our hair, sand between the toes and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets relax the body and mind.

For a country like India, being a peninsula (surrounded by water on three sides and land on one), there are plenty of beaches for one to enjoy. Karnataka, in particular, sits on the western part of the southern region and has plenty of beautiful beaches to capture the fancy of tourists.

Here are 10 of the best beaches that you absolutely must visit when in Karnataka:

1. Kudle beach: Situated 24 kms from Kumta city, this is the best beach for introverts as it provides privacy and solitude. If you want to get away from your every-day routine and hassle, this is the perfect place to be in.

Apart from the peak season (November to February), you can enjoy the beach all by your lonesome- take nice long walks along the beach, feel the cool sea breeze on your skin and bask in the beautiful sunset. During the peak season, however, people come here for peace of mind, good food and good company.

2. Paradise Beach: This is the fourth of Gokarna’s beautiful beaches and is located 33 kms from Kumta. Popularly known as “Full Moon Beach”, it covers a stretch of 150 metres, out of which 70 percent is rocks and the rest is white sand that makes the beach a place worth visiting. The only way to access this beach is to travel by motor boat from one of the other beaches or by trekking through the full moon beach. The serene environment of Paradise Beach will mesmerise you.

3. Maravanthe Beach: The striking feature about this beach is that it is a thin stretch of land with the Arabian sea on one side and the river Souparnika River on the other! As natural as it may seem, it leaves everyone astonished. Located 51 kms from Udupi, the beach runs parallel to the National Highway (NH17) at a distance of 100 metres. To add to this, the Kodachadri hills at the end of the stretch is the crowning beauty of the scene.

It has four rocky islands which include St. Mary’s island; one of the most frequently visited spots by locals as well as tourists. Someshwar Beach: Located in an unexplored area in Ullal, about 19 kms from Mangaluru, this beach is well known for its rock boulders called Rudra Shile that look beautiful when the gush of waves cover it and retrieve back. This place is known for its tranquillity, quietude and calmness. However, the sea gushes forth with strong currents that make it unfit for swimming.
