Mangaluru: A family’s beach-side revelry took a tragic turn when their four-year-old daughter drowned at Someshwar Beach on Monday, December 24. Though lifeguards initially rescued all four members, the girl breathed her last at the hospital.

The victim has been identified as Maitreyi Ketkar (4). The rescued are Chintamani Ketkar (39), Shraddha Ketkar (35) and their seven-year-old daughter Gargi Ketkar, residents of North India.

Sources from Someshwar Beach informed that all four members of the family were enjoying a swim in the sea when tragedy struck. When they were having a gala time, a strong wave swept one of the children away, which forced parents to rush to rescue their daughter. In such melee, all three got trapped in the sea water.

On noticing this, others at the beach screamed for help. Immediately, lifeguards at Someshwar Beach rushed to rescue them. Though they succeeded in rescuing all of them initially, four-year-old Maitreyi Ketkar did not respond to the treatment and succumbed. The condition of another girl Gargi Ketkar is also said to be critical.

More details are awaited.
