Mangaluru: Two jail inmates were killed and over ten suffered injuries in a major fight that erupted in Mangaluru district jail during breakfast on Monday, November 2.
The deceased are Madoor Yusuf, a notorious criminal and his associate Ganesh Shetty. The injured inmates were admitted to Wenlock Hospital. Few of them are identified as Pradeep Vamanjoor, Umesh Kombar, Yuvraj Soorinje, Asif and Iqbal.
It is said that the men were equipped with weapons. Following the clash, security has been beefed up at the jail premises. Police sources stated that there were brawls between the two gangs in the past few days.
Speaking to press persons, Mangaluru City Commissioner said that the reason for the fight was yet to be ascertained, however, he ruled out chances of a communal clash.
When asked about the possession of weapons with the gang members, he opined that they might have been thrown in over the jail compound wall by few aides.
Yusuf, wanted in several murder cases including murder of the then BJP member Sukhanand Shetty, was arrested in 2010 by the Interpol in Riyadh and brought to Mangaluru. Ganesh Shetty, a sharpshooter, was arrested in 2010 in connection with the 1994 Mahendra Pratap murder case.
Investigation is underway.
