Two youth drown in quarry pit; no fencing even after order by DC

Bantwal: In an tragic incident, two youth, who had gone to swim in an abandoned red stone quarry pit filled with water, drowned in Bavaliguri KIADB site in Chelur village near Ira in Bantwal here on Sunday August 9.
QwareThe deceased are identified as Jayaprakash (22) resident of Maji in Chelur village and Deekshith (18). Both of them along with other friends Akshay, Naresh, Sudesh, Shekhar and Santhosh had come to the come stone quarry in three bikes to spend the weekend on Sunday morning.

In the afternoon, Jayaprakash stepped into the water, and Deekshith followed him. They could not move in the sticky mud, could not come out of it and drowned at the bottom of this 40ft deep pit. Shekhar who went to rescue his struggling friends jumped into the quarry as well. However, he was saved by his friends.

Deekshith was a first year student of Asaigoli ITI college and Jayaprakash worked at a tile fixing industry. Jayaprakash is survived by his parents and a sister, whereas Deekshith is survived by parents and a brother.

Konaje police have registered case in this regard.

Quarry without wall

Deputy Commissioner is said to have instructed tahsildars to fence many private quarry pits in Mudipu. He had asked them to complete fencing around quarry pits and take other security steps, after several cases of children drowning were reported in the district.

The youth drowned in the unsafe KIADB site quarry as it was open.

District panchayth member Santhosh Kumar Rai Boliyar said “we will complain to the DC in this regard and take a action at the earliest”.
