Mangaluru: An underground sewage treatment plant (STP) has been operating at Pacchanadi Moodushedde region under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Municipal Corporation. The aforementioned treatment plant has been alleged of releasing untreated polluted water that flows through Phalguni river bed into Maravoor Dam. This has resulted in drinking water issues for the residents in the said region.

Taking serious cognisance of reports and visuals, and complaints lodged by various organisations, Commissioner Akshy Sridhar, Mangaluru City Corporation conducted an inspection of STP and collected water samples July 3.

Following the inspection, Superintendent Engineers have been directed to issue show cause notice to STP operator M/S|| Envirotech Company ltd within 24 hours as to why a criminal case must not be lodged against them under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.

To ensure that such incidents do not repeat, CCTV cameras will be installed and regular inspection will be conducted henceforth.

In order to find a permanent solution for the issue, a technical report has been received from experts at NITK Surathkal. Based on the report, a request has been sent to the government for an estimated amount of Rs. 247.00 lakhs.
