Mangaluru: Urging to withdraw the proposal of modernising the slaughterhouse at Kudroli under the Smart City project and demanding shut down of the existing one immediately, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had organised a protest meeting outside the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Friday, October 12.

Addressing the protest meeting, Vishwa Hindu Parishat District President Jagadish Shenava said, “The fund meant for Smart City projects should not be used for the modernisation of Kudroli slaughterhouse which is located inside the city. As the High Court has ordered shifting of a slaughterhouse in Bengaluru to the outskirts, the decision of modernising the same at a cost of Rs 15 Crore in Mangaluru is meaningless. Hence, the decision should be revoked immediately”, he said.

“Following a direction from the State Pollution Control Board (PCB) to shift the slaughterhouse to another location, the MCC had consented to shift it to another safe location within two years. An affidavit was also furnished in this regard to PCB. However, the slaughterhouse has not been shifted till date. Besides that, plenty of stolen cattle is slaughtered here on a regular basis. Hence, the Kudroli slaughterhouse should be shut down immediately”, he said.

Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell said, “Kudroli abattoir has been functioning illegally as the stolen cattle is being slaughtered there. No guidelines are followed while slaughtering the animals here. As it hurts the religious sentiments of the Hindus and it provokes the youth, the Kudroli slaughterhouse must be closed immediately and the decision of earmarking a huge amount of Rs 15 Crore for its modernisation under the Smart City project should be withdrawn at the earliest”, he stressed.

Hundreds of leaders from both VHP and Bajrang Dal participated in the meeting. After the protest meeting, a memorandum was submitted to the MCC commissioner in order to review the decision of modernising the abattoir under Smart City project.

VHP District Secretary Shivanand Mendon, Executive President Gopal Kuttar and Gouraksha chief Pradeep Pumpwell among others were present.
