Mangaluru: In view of treating solid waste, a pipe compost programme was introduced at the house level in every taluk of Dakshina Kannada. As many as 3,224 composts in Sullia, 5655 in Bantwal, 6258 in Puttur, 3396 in Mangaluru and 5519 in Belthangady were created within two months time, Zilla Panchayat (ZP) President Asha Thimmappa Gowda said.

As the tenure of ZP functionaries for the third part, will get over on February 8, Gowda on Monday January 11, said that she will leave her office with head high and utmost satisfaction of working for the people in true sense. She said that the awards that the ZP bagged during her tenure is a witness to the work put in by her and colleagues irrespective of the political parties.

Permanent drinking water has been provided to deprived areas at a cost of Rs 180.29 crores under National Rural Drinking Water, she said.

As many as 18,471 houses have been built and another 5248 are under construction under Indira Awaz and Basava Vasathi Yojane, from 2010-11 to 2015-16, she informed.

Speaking further she said that the ZP team paid visits to every Gram Panchayat in its limits on Tuesdays under ‘Jana Snehi’ scheme and created awareness to the villagers on various projects in addition to issuing identity cards to over 2,000 individuals.
ZP Vice-President Sathish Kumpala said that the State government showed lax attitude towards Dakshina Kannada ZP as it almost slashed half of the funds. He said that though proposals for 21 Multi-Village drinking water schemes were submitted, the government sanctioned only five. He said that the earlier State governments had sanctioned Rs 2 crore and Rs 1 crore for ZP and TP respectively. However, the Siddaramaiah led government quashed this.

Complaining that the Kinnigoli water project is a complete failure, Kumpala alleged the ZP had found wrongdoing on the part of the contractor and had hence blacklisted him. However, Minister Abhayachandra Jain delisted him and assigned him other projects as well. Kumpala also said during a KDP meet, Jain told him to mind his work and not foray into work falling under the latter’s limits.

The Vice-President also recalled former ZP CEO Tulsi Maddineni saying it was due to her vision that most of the work got institutionalized.

Both Gowda and Kumpala, who belong to the BJP expressed faith that their party is going to emerge victorious in the upcoming ZP and TP polls.
