Won’t withdraw nomination at any cost: Harikrishna Bantwal

Mangaluru: Close on the heels of Congress rebel candidate Jayaprakash Hegde sticking by his decision to contest the MLC polls as an independent candidate, another Congress rebel candidate, Harikrishna Bantwal has also expressed that he is firm on fighting the upcoming MLC polls as an independent candidate, representing the true Congress workers and would not withdraw the nomination at any cost.

Addressing a press meet on Friday, December 11, Bantwal said that he was deeply hurt as the Congress chose to field a person such as Pratapchandra Shetty in the polls, who had been claiming that he did not want to contest for any post as politics has been ‘corrupted’. However, only because highly influential Congressman Oscar Fernandes wanted Pratapchandra in the fray, he had been given the ticket.

“Pratapchandra did not attend even a single meeting out of the 164 meetings held in the MCC. On the other hand, there were much deserving candidates such as Kallige Tharanath Shetty and AC Bhandary. How could the Congress not find even a single able candidate in 13 constituencies?,” he questioned cautioning the Congress that the party would become obsolete if such a trend continues.

Making it clear that he did not contest for the love of power, he said that he has been in the field of politics for 43 years out of which he spent the last 33 years with Janardhana Poojary. “Poojary was very close to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. I could have easily got things done if I wanted to. But I never worked for power,” he said adding that he was mentally prepared to be ousted from the Congress if the high command wanted.

Bantwal asserted that he would certainly fight against Yettinahole and the Niddodi power projects if he wins the polls.
