There was a vacant land in Survey no-105 on Friday morning here in Chara, but by evening as many as 20 illegal houses had mushroomed leaving villagers in state of surprise.

On Friday morning, team of 20 masons backed with helpers arrived at the spot and started building houses after demarking land. Within no time foundation and houses made of cement blocks stood tall. All the building materials were brought to spot in trucks and lorries and by evening 20 houses without plastering and paints were ready.

The locals say that the individuals who resorted to building the houses illegally had planned it strategically keeping in mind that for the next five days nobody can interrupt them as there are five days of consecutive holidays.

However, the plans went awry when Karkala Tahshildar acted swiftly and sent Ajekar hobli Revenue Inspector Manjunath Nayak and Village Accountant Vijay Kumar to the spot and made sure that the ceilings made of asbestos sheets were dismantled. The officers took signatures from the parties that the houses would be completely pulled down by Wednesday.

It may be noted that the said land was allotted for providing sites for the siteless after nine-year long fight. However, the individuals who built the houses on Friday were not from the village at all.
