Udupi: The 74th Independence Day celebration was held in a simple manner at the city’s Ajjarakadu Ground here today amid fear of a COVID pandemic.
In the absence of district in-charge minister, the national flag was hoisted by the District Commissioner G Jagadeesh IAS, followed by a guard of honor rendered by various branches of the police and civil defense forces.
In his address, G Jagadeesh mentioned some of the important projects being undertaken in the district, prominently the Hejadmady Fishing Harbour, Textile Park at Karkala, development of beaches in the district, flood relief distribution, among others.
He said that the state government has released Rs 181.84 crore for the development of the Hejamady Fishing Harbour near Padubidri of Kaup taluk. The work will be started soon, he said.
In order to provide employment for the youth, the government has planned the textile park project at Nitte, Karkala Taluk. The project will be started immediately, he said.
This year the government has already released Rs 20 crore for flood relief in the district. Under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Department, 557 beneficiaries of last year’s flood calamity have already received an amount of Rs 160.81 lacs. At the cost of Rs. One crore, the Koti-Chennaya Theme Park project work will be started, he said.
He also announced that all the beaches in the district will be developed; Rs. 4.2 crore will be released for the construction of a jetty at St Mary’s Island and Rs. 2.5 crore will be spent on the Malpe Sea-walk and Malpe Beach development project.
Doctors, lab technicians, junior health assistants, teachers, vehicle drivers, Asha volunteers, and civic workers were felicitated during the ceremony.
Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat, District Panchayat President Dinakar Babu, Udupi Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan, Coastal Guard Force SP Chetan, CEO of ZP Preethi Gehlot, Coastal Development Authority Chairman Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, Udupi City Urban Development Authority Chairman Raghavendra Kini and others were present.
