Karkala: In response to a plea from the Rector of Basilica, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has intervened to provide a temporary mobile tower to Attur Minor Basilica. At the same time, he has instructed the department officials to construct a permanent tower in the near future to find a lasting solution to the mobile connectivity problem in the area.

The famed parish in Attur was accorded Minor Basilica status by the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis recently.

The Attur Minor Basilica is 5 km away from Nitte Gram Panchayath and is richly inhabited and usually crowded with plenty of pilgrims visiting the shrine. Despite all this, many pleas to elected representatives and department concerned by the Rector of Basilica George D’Souza to improve mobile connectivity in the area had gone unheard for years.

In August 2016, Rector of Basilica George D’souza wrote a letter to the Communications Minister Manoj Sinha and explained the problem in detail. Even that effort did not bear fruit.

Finally Rector decided to get it straight from the horse’s mouth and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi apprising him of the problems faced and sought his intervention in sanctioning a mobile tower.

Responding to the plea, Prime Minister instructed officials of the department concerned to provide connectivity within the shortest duration possible and sent a letter to the parish priest informing him about the action taken over the issue.

Rector has received the letter from the Prime Minister’s office and the BSNL Regional Head, Ravi, based in Mangaluru has assured of quick action. The temporary mobile tower has already been established and efforts are on to set up a permanent mobile tower with design already in place to meet the needs of thousands of people who flock the shrine. Defective land lines have been rectified and Optical Fibre Connectivity (OFC) too has been provided to the shrine.

Responding on the developments, an elated Rector George D’Souza said, “Nation can touch greater heights if the elected representatives, officials and all other people concerned act towards solving the problems of people at grass root level within their respective territories”.

St Lawrence Church is one of the most famous churches of Southern India. Set up in 1759, this church attracts devotees from all religions. The faithful believe that the one feet tall idol of St Lawrence has answers for all their problems and miseries in life.

Minor basilica (Latin: Basilica minor, Basilicæ minores in plural) is a title given to some Roman Catholic churches. According to Canon law, no church building can be honoured with the title of Basilica unless by apostolic grant or from immemorial custom. Presently, the authorising decree is granted by the Pope through the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

In all, there are 21 Minor Basilicas in India, of which the most renowned are Vailankanni and Poondy in Tamilnadu, Mount Mary in Mumbai and Bom Jesus in Old Goa. St Lawrence Minor Basilica is only the second Minor Basilica in Karnataka, after the renowned St Mary’s Minor Basilica, Shivajinagar, Bengaluru.
