Udupi: A boat caught fire in deep-sea due to short-circuit during the wee hours of Thursday; however, seven fishermen on board were rescued successfully.
Devadas, Krishna, Veerendra, Krishna R, Mestha, Seetharam Karvy, Jeethendra and Guru – all fishermen from Honnavar had ventured fishing on September 29 from Malpe harbour in a deep-sea fishing boat named Aakash. However, the boat got engulfed in flames following short-circuit when it reached near Karwar. A cylinder blast only added to the agony.
Noticing that some fishermen were in trouble, fishermen in another boat named Seethali Mahalakshmi rushed to help also informed the help desk. With the help of fishermen from Seethali Mahalakshmi boat and the Coast Guards, the seven fishermen in distressed boat were saved. The losses have been estimated at Rs 60 lac.
