Udupi: In a shocking display of medical negligence, a 10-year-old girl suffering from a severe case of dengue was made to wait in an ambulance in critical condition, for four whole hours due to the refusal of hospital staff to admit the child into the hospital.

On October 30, Badamma, daughter of coolie workers Parasu and Neelamma was admitted at District Women and Children Hospital, Udupi. After a thorough medical examination, it was found that the child was suffering from acute dengue fever and her parents were informed that her chances of survival were slim to none. They advised the parents to get her admitted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru and the doctor said he would call ahead and ask them to prepare for her arrival.

The parents immediately took Badamma to Mangaluru in a 108 ambulance.

They were in for a shocker when they arrived at Wenlock Hospital. They were rejected by the doctors who claimed that they could not get her admitted as the necessary infrastructure wasn’t available. In desperation, the parents tried to contact the hospital back in Udupi but were met with a seemingly endless dial tone. The parents continued to plead for their child’s admission and in spite of all that, the girl was forced to remain in the ambulance.

Desperate and understandably frustrated, the parents contacted Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, a social worker in Udupi. They relayed their story to him and asked for his help to save their daughter.

Vishu Shetty immediately contacted the doctors of Udupi hospital and inquired about the girl. The doctors told him that the child’s survival was doubtful and the they were faced with no other option but to refer her to Wenlock Hospital. Vishu immediately got the girl back to Udupi by same ambulance and got her admitted to Adarsh Hospital, a private hospital.

The activist also came forward to bear the expenses of the child’s treatment. The child was then admitted and her treatment began.
