Udupi: The Karnataka State Coastal Zone Management Authority along with the Forest, Environment and Ecology department have given their approval for the extraction of sand from CRZ areas in the Udupi and Brahmavar taluks from the sand blocks identified in the district.
The administration had previously submitted a proposal seeking permission for the extraction of sand from identified dunes in the district after the people began to suffer an acute shortage of sand.
A press release by the Senior Geologist of the Mines and Geology department said that a circular containing a list of sand blocks has been published in the office of the Senior Geologist, Mines and Geology, Rajathadri, Manipal. As per the circular, eligible sand extractors can apply for a permit along with the suitable documents on or before October 27. Those who had availed permits for sand extraction from the Mines and Geology department prior to 2011 in the Udupi and Brahmavar taluks, can also apply for the same, it added.
