Udupi: A national-level Chess tournament will be held in Udupi on December 9 and 10 by Kalabhimani Sangha (R), Kaup in collaboration with Vidyaniketan Group of Institutions and supported by the Udupi District Chess Association (R), Udupi.
Addressing a press meet here at Vidyaniketan school in Kaup, Shrinivas Poojary, president of Kalabhimani Sangha (R) Kaup said, “for the first time a national level Chess tournament ‘Shri Narayana Guru Trophy National FIDE Rating Rapid Chess Tournament’ will be held on December 9 and 10 in a rural place. There are a total of 175 prizes to be won, with a grand total of a whopping Rs 2 lakh. There is Open Category (Top 25), Age category (Under 7, 9, 11, 13 & 15- Top 10 boys and girls separately) and also participants will be competing for Udupi Best Player (Top 10), Kaup Best Player (Top 10), Rating Category and Best Youngest Player prize too.
The tournament will witness the plays of some of the greats like Coastal Karnataka First International Master Viani D’Cunha from DK, United Karnataka Chess Association Secretary Aravind Shastry, and one of the top players in Karnataka Gahan M G, Sakshath Kaup, Devdas Pai, Harish Kumar Brahmavara, Babu J Poojary Uppunda and Mahima Serigar.
On December 9, K P Acharya, president of Vidyaniketan Group of Institutions will preside over the inaugural of the tournament at 9am. Minister for Sports Pramod Madhwaraj and UPCL president Kishore Alwa will inaugurate the tournament. Businessmen Gurme Suresh Shetty, Udaya Shetty Muniyalu – president of Muniyalu Udayakrishnaiah Shetty Charitable Trust, Dr Rajagopal Shenoy – associate dean KMC Manipal, Shrinivas Poojary Katapady, Dr Kailas Poojary, Muthu Kumar, Vincent Lobo Chikkamagaluru, G M Laxmana Gowda and Harish Poojary Ammembala will be present on the occasion.
On December 10, valedictory function will be held at 5.30pm which will be presided over by MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake. K P Acharya, president of Vidyaniketan Group of Institutions, Lalaji R Mendon Kaup, Raghupathy Bhat Udupi, Vasanth Kumar Nitte, Muthu Kumar Bengaluru and other dignitories will be present as chief guests.
