Karkala: Ex-MLA Gopala Bhandary, at a press meet, alleged that the central government is playing with the life of the people in the coastal region.
“The state government has submitted a detailed pro-people report on the Kasturi Rangan project thrice to the centre. Even today, the Central government has not taken the report seriously and instead, sent the draft directive for implementing the crucial report which is against people”, he said addressing the media.

He also accused the BJP and its representatives for misleading people by saying that the state government has not submitted any report at all. “The truth cannot be hidden for long. The state government has already submitted its stand on the crucial project thrice. If needed, once again, it will be submitted to the central government”, he said.

Ex-minister Gopala Bhandary released the copy of the reports submitted by the state government at the press meet held in Hebri.

The Central government had reportedly asked the state about implementing the Kasturi Rangan report. Accordingly, the state government, under the chairmanship of the Forest minister had formed a state cabinet sub-committee which included MLAs, MPs, people’s representatives, associations, media, villagers and others. The committee is said to have collected opinions from all the people residing in the place where the project was to be implemented and researched on the project. They had excluded the 10 km eco-sensitive area and fixed the forest limit itself as the border in the Kasturi Rangan report. The report was a pro-people report which was submitted on May 5 and April 24. A final report was submitted on September 2.

“Even though we have taken the acknowledgement as well, for the submission, central government has sent the directive on September 4 showing disregard to the state report and thereby has cheated the people of the state”, Bhandary said.

State forest and ecology department additional chief secretary Madan Gopal too, has reportedly submitted a separate report to the Environment ministry.

“Karnataka and Kerala have submitted their respective reports on Kasturi Rangan, where the congress is ruling. Whereas, the BJP ruled states like Goa, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have not yet submitted any reports. The central government is least bothered to ask for their reports. Kerala government which praised the Karnataka report copied it and submitted the same. The central government has complete power to approve or disapprove the report sent by state government. Instead, it is targeting the congress government and misleading people by lying”, Bhandary alleged.

“If the central government under BJP, has concern for the people, it has 39 days to act before the final directive is sent on the crucial project.  Keeping in mind the welfare of the people of Malenadu, the centre has to approve state report.  They have to protect innocent people of the region who are living in fear due to the project. They cannot cheat people for their political milage”, he added.

He then went on to say that the Central government ruled by the BJP has failed to get reports from BJP ruling states. “It has sent a directive even though the state report has been sent thrice. This is an attempt by the BJP to mislead people and it is trying to malign the image of congress. If the BJP representatives are really concerned about people, they should cancel the previous report and instead accept the report sent by state government”, he added.

He then pointed a finger at MP Shobha Karandlaje and said that the latter had promised that when she came to power she would not allow the Kasturi Rangan report to be implemented. However, “now she is spreading lies by saying that the state government has not submitted any report to the centre. Every MP comes to know about all the meetings convened about Kasturi Rangan report at the centre. Still Shobha is saying she is not aware of it. She is misleading people through the media. If needed, we will once again send the state report to the centre”, he said.

Zilla panchayat member Mudradi Manjunath Poojary, Hebri block Congress president Neere Krishna Shetty, leader Praveen Ballal, Congress booth committee president H Janardhan were present during the press meet.
