Udupi: Udupi police traced 2 children, a girl aged 13 years and a boy aged 9, who denied to go back home as they were unable to bear further torture from their parents. Later the children were handed over to Child Welfare Committee on Monday.
Police said that a missing complaint was lodged by the children’s mother Lalitha Hanumantha in Manipal police station on July 12.
The kids on being questioned admitted that they belong to Parkala and they purposely left the house as they were subjected to routine torture by their parents.
The children later narrated that they caught a bus to Udupi and arrived at Rajangana Parking, where they stood hungry for long time. As it was Ekadashi that day, no food was given to the devotees. They only had Rs 10 in hand so they started begging for food. Mahesh, a security guard at the parking lot, took them to his house and offered them food.
Next day the police took the kids under custody and they were given counseling after which, the children went with their parents. However, the parents have been told to appear before the committee next week
CWC officials said that both the parents and the children need counseling and that CWC would work on it. The children have been given a helpline number and a CWC contact number in case of any emergency. The parents have assured that they would henceforth not torture the kids.
The father Hanumantha is said to be working as a tipper lorry driver; the family belongs to Koppala district.
