Udupi: Paryaya Pejawar Mutt seer Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swami opined that the Lingayat community should remain in the fold of Hindu religion and not think about separating from it.

Addressing presspersons the seer mentioned that the Lingayats are worshippers of Lord Shiva and hence cannot claim themselves to be non-Hindus.

Opining that Lingayat and Veerashaiva were branches of the same religion, the Swamiji urged them to reconsider their demand for a separate religion tag, he however said that this being their internal matter, the decision was left unto them and he would not interfere in the same.

The followers of Lingayat tradition had stated that they did not accept the caste system in Hinduism, he said. But even the followers of Sri Ramakrishna Mission and Arya Samaj did not accept the caste system and so also various other traditions of Vaishnavism and Shaivism. Did that make them separate religion? he asked.
