Udupi: “The students of Milagres College have done very well by performing street plays to spread awareness about the evils of child labour and atrocities against women”, said Justice P Vishwanath Shetty, Lokayukta of Karnataka and former justice of Karnataka High Court, adding that their efforts were much appreciated.

Addressing a gathering at the valedictory programme of the “Awareness Week on Legal Services”, organised by the district administration, District Legal Services Authority and Udupi District Bar Association, at the Udupi District Court premises on November 18.

Justice Vishwanath Shetty spoke of the various laws in our constitution, that are present for the protection of women and children, adding that it was not possible for the government to wipe out all atrocities and ill-treatment of women and children. He also spoke about the daily rise in cases of missing women and children, after which he instructed the police officials to make a report of all missing women and children from all police stations and submit it.

“There is an increase of cases in the courts on a daily basis, but due to various reasons the judgments are getting delayed”, he said, adding that there was a need to approach Lok Adalats for the early disposal of cases. He then asked for the advocates to join hands in the fight against corruption and help the poor get justice through the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority.

“The Lokayukta and the Legal Services Authority are related, but unlike the Lokayukta, the Legal Services Authority cannot punish the accused”, he concluded.
