Udupi: With over 20 devotees performing ‘Made Snana’ at Sri Subrahmanya Gudi’ in Udupi Krishna Temple premises on Thursday, December 17, Udupi Deputy Commissioner has said that he would seek a report from the Superintendent of Police in connection to the same.
‘Made Snana’ is an age old practice where the faithful voluntarily roll over the left over food partaken by the Brahmin classes. This is performed mostly by devotees who would have had vowed to perform the practice on fulfillment of their prayers.
While the Supreme Court had banned the ritual of ‘Made Snana’, devotees continued to express their desire to perform the same. Hence Pejawar Math seer had evolved an alternative practice called Ede Snana, where the devotees could roll over the prasadam offered to the deity.
However, with ‘Made Snana’ being performed in Udupi temple without any deviation, the Udupi DC has said that he would seek report on the same from the SP and Udupi Tahshildar.
Richest temple of Karnataka-Kukke Subrahmanya hits the headline every year during the ‘Shashti’ festival specifically because of ‘Made Snana practice, which intellectuals and certain section claim to be against human dignity and that tribals are forced to perform the same.
This year over 1,000 devotees performed ‘Ede Snana’ at Kukke temple over the last three days of ‘Champa Shashti’.
