Karkala: Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar reportedly had a meeting with Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in connection with the setting up of the tollgate in Belman along the Karkala–Padubidri state highway. He also handed the CM a written request in this regard.

Stating that the toll would be a burden for the people of the surrounding areas Kumar opined that it is not right for the government to collect toll charges four years after the road work has been completed and as toll gates were already set up within 60 km from the proposed Belman tollgate.

The CM has reportedly gone through various media reports regarding the Belman tollgate issue and has assured that he would discuss the matter with the officials and gather information about how the issue can be resolved. He will then announce the final outcome of the discussions.

Meanwhile, a delegation led by MLC Ivan D’Souza, along with former MLA Gopala Bhandary, met with PWD minister Revanna and petitioned him to drop the Belman toll gate proposal stating that the farmers of the surrounding areas had already sacrificed their fertile lands for the repair and expansion of the highway and that it was unreasonable for the government to collect toll charges.

Revanna then promised to hold discussions with the officials concerned and take steps accordingly.

Xavier D’Mello, member of the Belman Toll Gate Action Committee and others were present.
