Malpe: On Tuesday November 23, a rare fish that has been caught by a boat here earned Rs. 1.8 lakh at auction.

A 20 kg ghol fish was caught in the nets of the deep-sea boat ‘Balarama.’ The fish was auctioned at Malpe port for Rs. 1.80 lakh, or Rs. 9,000 per kg.

Ghol fish, also known as goli fish or black-spotted croaker fish, is an exotic fish with a scientific name of ‘Protonibea Diacanthus’. According to Sivakumar Haragi and Srikanth G. B. of Karnataka University’s Marine Biology Department, the fish is valued in East Asia for its therapeutic capabilities.

The fish is valuable not just for its tasty meat but also for the contents of its stomach pouch. It is known as “Sea Gold” because of the pouch in its stomach, which is said to have great therapeutic properties and is highly valued in other countries.

The Ghol fish, which is mostly found in the Indo-Pacific region, is one of the costly marine species in the world. It can be found in the Arabian Sea’s coastal estuary, which stretches from Sri Lanka to Australia.

Ghol fish can reach a length of 1.5 metres. The value of the fish rises in proportion to its weight.
