Udupi: A Sub-Inspector has been accused of beating up an innocent Dalit youth during a clash that erupted between the members of the BJP and the Congress at Bombarabettu here on Saturday, February 21.

The victim identified as Kiran (18), was at work at the plantation belonging to a person named Sadananda Shetty.

Though it appears to be a case of mistaken identity, the Dalit association members have demanded suspension of SI Rafiq attached to Hiriadka police station.

During the polls, a fight erupted between the Congress and the BJP members in the premises of Mundaje school polling booth. SI Rafiq and his men, who arrived at the spot resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the mob. During this charge, a few members involved in the clash barged into Shetty’s property. Rafiq chased and whipped them. In the process, he also hit Kiran.

Kiran who sustained injuries is recuperating at a private hospital.

Following the incident, members of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and Samata Sainik Dal visited Kiran at the hospital and later demanded that an FIR be lodged against SI Rafiq adding that he should be suspended from duty.

They also alleged that Rafiq had attacked innocent members of the SC/ST community in the past as well, however no action was taken against him. They cautioned of protests if the SI is not punished.
