Thousands of devotees flock to Attur shrine as feast begins

Karkala: The annual feast of St. Lawrence Shrine at Attur near Karkala in Udupi district attracted a large number of devotees on the first day of the five-day celebration starting from Sunday, January 24.

A procession of the holy sacrament was taken out from the shrine to the ground in Chetana Halli and back to the shrine.

Rev Fr Herald Pereira during the celebration said that the contribution of Christians in the fields of education and social service is immense.

Referring to the holy communion, he said that the communion carries a great responsibility. The ones who consume it, are supposed to live with sincerity and unity in the society.

Parish priest Rev Fr George D’Souza was present among others.

For the annual feast that witnesses participation of people from various parts of the state and from all religions will have 41 masses spread across five days by five Bishops from different diocese.

Holy Eucharists for children and the sick will be held on January 24 and 25 respectively in Konkani followed with special prayers.

On January 26, at 4.30 pm, Dr Eugene, Bishop of Varanasi will render the mass in English. Kannada mass will be delivered by Ballari Bishop Dr Henry D’Souza at 6 pm.

On January 27 Belthangady Bishop Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhi will deliver the mass in Kannada at 4.30 pm. Mangalore Bishop, Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, will hold mass in Konkani at 10.30 am on the same day.

Udupi Bishop, Dr Gerald Issac Lobo, will hold mass in Konkani at 10 am on January 28.
