Two brain-dead float hope for ten needy patients

Udupi: Six people will benefit from organs and four others will get their eye sights back from two brain-dead patients of Kasturba Hospital Manipal. The kidneys of the brain-dead patients will be used in Mangaluru and Manipal. The other organs were airlifted to Bengaluru on Saturday, November 5.

Valerian D’Souza (56), one of the brain-dead patients, met an accident on November 3. He had admitted to Manipal Hospital where he declared brain-dead the next afternoon by the doctors. His two corneas, two kidneys, and a liver were harvested by the doctors after obtaining consent of his wife. While his kidneys were used for patients at Manipal Kasturba Hospital and Mangaluru A J Hospital, his liver was sent to Apollo Hospital Bengaluru.

Kishore (45) had admitted to KMC on Novemebr after he suffered a fall. After obtaining the consent of Kishore’s brothers and sisters, his kidneys were used for patients at Manipal Kasturba Hospital and KMC Hospital Mangaluru respectively. The liver was sent to BGS Hospital Bengaluru. His corneas have been stored in the eye bank of Manipal Hospital.

Kasturba Hospital Manipal medical superintendent and chief operating officer, Dr Col M Dayanand informed that Dr B M Zeeshan, Dr Padmaraj Hegde and Dr Arun Chawla of urology department of KMC Hospital Manipal, Dr Anita Shenoy, head of the department of anesthesia, and Dr Mahesh Gopashetty of Apollo Hospital Bengaluru performed surgeries to harvest the organs.
