Udupi: The Malpe Beach Development Committee in the Udupi District has installed safety nets along a length of the beach in response to an increase in the number of cases of tourists drowning there in recent years.
The nets are in place to keep tourists from entering dangerous areas of the sea.
The six-foot-high netting have been erected along the major beach area for a one-kilometer stretch. Red flags have also been placed to warn visitors of the impending danger.
According to sources, anyone who cross the net and step into the water would be fined Rs 500. There is also a public address system in place to warn tourists.
