Udupi: “Child marriage is a punishable offence and all stakeholders in society should work together to eliminate the social evil and it has a negative impact on a woman’s psychological and physical growth,” said Udupi Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao while launching the ‘Video on Wheels’ campaign against child marriages in Udupi.
He said that the victims of child marriages are denied education. “Children who are married as children are denied an education. Many rights have been taken away from them, including the right to life and the right to self-protection, among others,” he said.
Teachers should create awareness against child marriages. Such incidents must be reported to the toll-free number 1098 by the general public, he added.
He also made a public appeal to end child marriages in the district and urged the implementation of awareness programmes in areas with migrant populations.
