Mangaluru: On Saturday August 28, a campaign called “A day for women’s safety” was held with the concept of “your call to 112 – visit by us to your place” within the City Police Commiserate’s limit.

After the gang rape event in Mysuru sent shockwaves throughout the State, the City Police seem to have been kept on high alert. The goal of the initiative is to raise public awareness about the need of using the ERSS number 112, from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, a team of over a hundred police officers, including the Police Commissioner, will be responding to public calls to Emergency Response Support System – ERSS 112. Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner along with other officers will visit the area where the calls are coming from.

Chief guest, Olympian M.R. Poovamma, unveiled the programme.

According to the sources, the Police Commissioner had previously stated that citizens can take advantage of this opportunity to bring to the attention, the issues such as women’s family problems, harassment of female students, problems encountered in public places such as bus stops and railway stations, harassment at work, cyber problem, photo viral, calls to private mobile phones, mischief through SMS, and causing problems to public.

Speaking to the media persons, he said, “Whether the callers are female students, young ladies, women, senior citizens, or others, we will answer immediately. If you let us know where you live, we will come to your house right away to talk about it. Even though the weekend curfew is in effect on Saturday, it will not prevent you from informing us of your problems.”

According to him, this is a small effort by the commisserate to ensure that ladies are safer in the City. He appealed to the citizens to join the commisserate in their efforts. In addition to bringing their personal concerns, people also can inform the police’s attention to problems that they observe in their neighbourhoods. He promised that the details of the discussions would be kept private.

Approximately 20 emergency vehicles would be used for the campaign. Within 15 minutes, the ERSS vehicle will arrive at the location where the emergency call was received. Within the municipal limits, the car arrives at the location in less than five minutes. By placing a sample call, the Police Commissioner personally tested the response time.
