Kodagu: A tourist died under mysterious circumstances in a homestay here on the night of Sunday October 24. The deceased has been identified as Vighneshwari (24), a native of Toranagallu in Ballari District, who was working as a techie in a private company in Mumbai.
It is said that the five techies booked a room in a homestay near Madikeri and checked in on Saturday October 23. While having bath on Sunday night Vighneshwari did not come out for a long time. The workers broke open the door of bathroom and found her in an unconscious state. Immediately she was rushed to a hospital but she succumbed on the way to hospital.
Preliminary investigation reveals that an LPG gas geyser used for hot water without ventilation caused asphyxiation. Town police has registered a case against homestay owner for negligence. The District Homestay Association President B. G. Ananthashayana urged authorities to close unauthorised homestays in the district. He said the homestay owner staying abroad has rented it to a person. He said hundreds of homestays are running without registration and permission in the District by flouting norms, which is causing breach of safety and security, he added.
