Anthrax Suspected After 47 Sheep Die in Gadag’s Sevanagar
A mysterious mass death of 47 sheep on the outskirts of Sevanagar, Shirahatti taluk (Gadag district) has raised concerns over a possible anthrax outbreak.
The tragedy unfolded over the weekend, with 22 sheep perishing on Saturday, followed by 25 more on Sunday. Veterinary officials have collected blood and nasal swab samples from the carcasses and sent them for laboratory testing in Bagalkot.
Dr. Ningappa Olekar, the taluk veterinary officer, stated that the symptoms observed indicate anthrax. As a precautionary measure, the department has procured anti-anthrax vaccines and has begun vaccinating sheep and cattle in Sevanagar and nearby villages to prevent further spread.
Authorities are now awaiting lab confirmation while continuing efforts to contain any potential outbreak.
