Hubballi: The Hubballi Railway Station is on the verge of becoming an “A1” category railway station in the country by achieving the monetary target of Rs. 60 Crore annual transaction. Currently, its annual transaction is around Rs. 50 Crore.

Speaking after inaugurating two escalators on platform number 2/3 and 4/5 at the railway station here on Monday Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi stated that the escalators were constructed at an approximate cost of Rs. 2.5 Crore.

With good co-ordination between top officials and railway staff the Hubballi station was slowly growing as a world class railway station. Hubballi is the fourth railway station in the South Western Railway (SWR) region to get the escalators, he added.

“The escalators will help passengers, especially elders and differently-abled at the station,” he said and added that under MP’s Local Area Development Fund, Rs. 17 Lakh had been transferred to the department’s account to purchase two battery operated vehicles to facilitate elders and handicapped persons at the station.

Record Funds

Joshi said for the first time in the history of SWR, the Centre had released Rs. 2779 Crore for taking up various developmental works, as compared to Rs. 929 Crore sanctioned in 2010-11.

He expressed confidence that the track doubling work between Bengaluru and Hubballi would be completed by 2019 and the speed limit on this stretch would be increased from the existing 80 kms/hr to100 kms/hr.

With regard to the long-pending Hubballi-Ankola railway project he said a new proposal had been sent by the State government to get clearance from Environment Ministry.

SWR GM A K Gupta said the SWR had received Rs. 60 Crore this year, which was the highest in its history for providing public amenities at its stations.

SWR DRM A K Jain, Mayor Manjulla Akkur, former CM Jagadish Shettar, MLAs Prasad Abbayya, Arvind Bellad and others were present.
