Hubballi: Farmers waiting in long queue to sell their onion stock with APMC under minimum support price (MSP) have warned authorities of holding protest demanding extension of procurement date.

Hundreds of onion-laden tractors were seen standing in queue at the APMC premises at Amargol here on Wednesday evening, the last day to procure onions at minimum support price.

Farmers demanded that the last date for onion procurement should be extended till this month end, as onion was still being harvested. They also opposed grading of onions before procurement, and rejection based on size. Verbal clash between farmers also took place regarding parking of tractors in the queue.

“Onions were not procured from December 1 to 4. Therefore, the procurement duration should be extended,” said Mallikarjungouda Balanagouda of Shirur in Navalgund taluk.

Navalgund MLA N H Konaraddi also visited the procurement centre and farmers explained their problems to him.

“A rasta roko would be staged if the last date for onion procurement was not extended,” said Karnataka Rajya Ratna Bharat Raitha Samaj leader Hemanagouda Basanagouda.

“Procurement of onions at MSP came to an end on Wednesday and government instruction regarding the extension of the last date has not been received. In all, 7500 quintals of onions were procured on December 5 and the quantity rose to 11,000 quintal on December 6. Farmers who brought onions on Wednesday have been given tokens and procurement would be completed on Thursday (December 8),” said Karnataka State Co-operative Marketing Federation branch manager Mallikarjun Mallammanavar. Procured onion would be sent to West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh for auctioning, he added.

Sold at Rs 20

Onions procured at the MSP of Rs 624 per quintal in Dharwad district has been auctioned at a minimum rate of Rs 20 per quintal in Bengaluru. But 35000 quintals of onions sent to West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have been auctioned at Rs 1100 per quintal, said APMC authorities.
