Hubballi: The Old Hubballi Kasabapet station police have arrested five persons involved in number of highway robbery cases. The recent among them was an incident near Raynal bridge on Pune-Bengaluru National Highway wherein a person was stabbed by the culprits.
On a tip-off, when the police set off to arrest them, it is said they were planning for another such robbery on NH near Disneyland Amusement Park on July 6 at 2 am.
Speaking to reporters, Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Pandurang Rane said the accused are David Popat, Sadiq Hattiwale, both residents of Tipu Nagar, Govind Ambiger of Gousiya town, Shankar Alur of Harishchandra Colony and Manjunath Kanaki of Sadashivnagar in Hubballi.
The five were allegedly involved in a number of criminal cases. On June 30, they had allegedly stabbed one Akbar Ali Abbas of Koimattur, who along with his four friends was returning from Goa and had parked the vehicle on roadside to attend nature’s call. Then the culprits who rushed to the spot on two-wheelers had stabbed him, before fleeing the scene with seven mobile phones and Rs 12,000 cash.
Then a case was registered with Old Hubballi Police Station.
The police have seized the gang’s motorcycles, five mobile phones, Rs 1,550 cash and some weapons, Commissioner said.
