bediHubballi: Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi who inaugurated “Seva Sangama Karnataka 2017”, a three-day conference of the Rashtriya Seva Bharati in Hubballi has stressed on the need for strengthening the last-mile connectivity with volunteerism to ensure that government schemes reach the people.

The government has announced several schemes and a large amount of funds for their implementation. However, the funds released by the government are not utilised properly and it does not reach a large section of the target group, she said.

“The main reason for this is that we have not yet strengthened the last-mile connectivity and sensitised beneficiaries about the schemes. This gap between the system and the people could be bridged by the youth, voluntary organisations, service agencies, social workers and activists. A large pool of such volunteers is available at universities. Students can be rewarded for their services in the form of additional grades, which may help in inculcating a service attitude among students and engage them in the task of nation building,” she said.

Kiran Bedi suggested the setting up citizens’ control rooms and a helpline, to disseminate information about government schemes to citizens by voluntary groups.
