Partial Wall Collapse at Historical Malkhed Fort in Kalaburagi Due to Heavy Rain
Kalaburagi: The historical Malkhed Fort in Sedam taluk of Kalaburagi district experienced a partial wall collapse on Friday due to continuous rainfall over the past two days. The persistent rainwater seeped into the fort’s aging walls, weakening the structure and causing the collapse. The incident was captured on video by nearby residents, and the footage has since gone viral.
The fort, constructed during the reign of the Rashtrakuta dynasty and once the capital of the famed king Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga, holds great historical significance. It is also associated with the creation of the first Kannada literary work, ‘Kaviraja Marga,’ by Srivijaya. However, the fort has been neglected, with no repair work undertaken in recent years, leading to further deterioration and posing a risk to the public.
Women who usually use the area near the fort for open defecation have become fearful of approaching the structure, concerned about potential further collapses. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the area was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Premalata, the assistant conservator of the state archaeology department, visited the site and confirmed that the collapse was due to the continuous rain. She also highlighted that the area around the fort has been encroached upon by two families living inside the fort and five others residing in structures attached to it. She emphasized the need for these families to be evicted to preserve the fort’s integrity and public safety.
