Bidar: The headmistress of Shaheen School and the mother of one of the school’s students, who were recently arrested on charges of sedition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, received a visit from AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday, February 1.
The two women are currently lodged in a Bidar jail.
It can be recalled that the school had staged a play against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register and also portrayed the PM in poor light.
The headmistress, Fareeda Begum and the class 6th student’s mother, Najamunnisa, were arrested on January 21. They have been booked under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes), 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting, attempting to promote disharmony) and 34 (common intent) of the IPC. The two women were later remanded to judicial custody.
Condemning the charges against the two women, Owaisi extended his support to them.
After the meeting, the AIMIM leader tweeted, “In a condemnable incident, they were arrested by Bidar police for sedition in connection with a school play. Fareeda madam is unwell and had to be administered glucose. Najamunnisa and her child live alone as she’s a widow. The child is now being looked after by her landlord. We offered our support and encouragement in this difficult time.”
He also met Superintendent of Police Bidar, Sreedhara, after which he tweeted, “Met with SP Bidar. We strongly objected to arrest and sedition charge for a school play. He said it’s under investigation and sedition may be removed. I said this should’ve been done before arresting these women as they are local residents. How can a school play be a crime?”
