Kalaburagi: Vice Chancellor of CUK H M Maheshwaraiah said on Saturday that in an effort to fall in line with prescribed standards set for universities, the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) will secure the accreditation of the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC).

Speaking to the reporters, Prof Maheshwaraiah said, “It is high time we seek NAAC accreditation and a formal application in this regard has been made. The university has already completed the self-study report for submission to NAAC,” he said.

Among the 13 central universities that were founded in 2009, CUK holds the top spot in terms academic performance and campus infrastructure, he said.

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) it is mandatory for Central universities to secure NAAC accreditation to ensure high standards of education and a higher NAAC grading would place the university at an advantageous position.

Prof Maheshwaraiah also informed that the University Grants Commission has permitted CUK to open 20 departments and, so far, 16 departments have been inaugurated. The new courses that have been planned in the ensuing year include music and fine arts, folkloristics and tribal studies, history and linguistics, women studies, studies in endangered languages, sugar technology and food processing, etc.

CUK’s second convocation will be held on December 22, at the presence of President of India Pranab Mukherjee, Prof Maheshwaraiah said.

He will confer degrees and gold medals to the graduating batch of students. The convocation, which was to be held on July 28, was cancelled following the demise of former president of India A P J Abdul Kalam.
