Kalaburagi: The Forest Officials have rescued hundreds of birds and tortoises from few houses here on Tuesday January 18. It is said that many persons are rearing birds and tortoises in their homes.
The foret officials swung into action followed by a complaint by Animal Welfare Board and rescued the birds and animals. According to Wildlife Protection Act 1972 rearing of these animals is punishable under law, and attracts three years of imprionment. However foreign breed love birds can be bred at houses with license from the Forest Department. Those who breed such birds should regiter themselves with Parivesh web portal.
Speaking to News Karnataka DCF B. Shivashankar said that having possession of any kind of animals, even a crow is punishable offence
under Wildlife Protection Act. He said breeding Indian origin bird and selling is also offence and the Department would initiate action.
