Kalaburagi: Nearly 30 of the more than 40 monkeys that fell into an unused dilapidated water tank died at Halakarti Village in Chittapur Taluk. The mass death of the monkeys has caused a foul smell and the villagers are afraid of an epidemic.

The storage of water in Halakarti Village, which is the headquarters of the Gram Panchayat, has been stopped for the last five to six years as the overhead tank has reached the point of collapse. In the last four to five days, monkeys have lost their lives while going to drink water.

The tragic incident came to light when the villagers inspected the tank after foul smell emanated from the same and also noticing monkeys roaming on the tree.

While the youth of the village dropped the rope and rescued some monkeys, the monkeys, who had been languishing in the tank for five to six days without food and water, have died.
