Koppal: The Koppal district of the state may soon be the site of Karnataka’s first Indian Grey Wolf sanctuary as the Karnataka Wildlife Board, led by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, is expected to approve the proposal on Tuesday.

According to a report by the Deccan Herald, the sanctuary, to be situated on forest area in the drylands of Bankapur of the Koppal district measuring 822.03 acres, is likely to be named the ‘Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary’.

The agenda copy circulated to the members of the board reportedly states that “a relative ecosystem for the conservation of these endangered species has been found in parts of Koppal district” and the area will also provide conservation of other wildlife like the striped hyena, Indian fox, golden jackal and other fauna.

According to the forest officials, say reports, the Bankapur, Mallapur and Sulekal village forest patches comprise rocky hillocks and thorny vegetation, while the Indian grey wolves, according to the proposal, inhabit the dry grassland region in the Deccan Plateau. Blackbucks and other herbivores make up the bulk of their prey.

It is also likely that the wildlife board will take up a proposal to set up the ‘Arsikere Sloth Bear Sanctuary’ by including Hirekallu Gudda and its adjoining areas.

Meanwhile, according to the DH report, it is also likely that the meeting will take up the long-pending proposal to declare Hesaraghatta as a conservation reserve.
