Raichur: All these years, the coastal areas were famous for prawn cultivation and export. But COVID-19 has changed the entire scenario.

Believe it or not, prawns from Raichur, a dry district of erstwhile Hyderabad-Karnataka region, will now be transported to coastal Karnataka and Mumbai.

Five farmers – Sarvesh Rayudu, Satish Doddi, Venkatesh Bhutapalli, Suresh Patil and Rajkumar Varapet – from the Devusugur village of the Raichur district have cultivated the prawns.

They have cultivated them on a 12-acre piece of land by at a cost of Rs 1.2 crores. Now, the lockdown has come as a blessing for these farmers as they are exporting the prawns to coastal Karnataka and Mumbai, where prawns have a good demand.

According to these farmers, they started transporting prawns to the coastal areas in April and so far, they have earned Rs 70 lakhs.

“Every Wednesday and Sunday, these prawns are transported. A kilogram of prawn is sold for Rs 300 to Rs 500,” they informed.

“We are using the services of 18 labourers from Kakinada. We are getting online orders even from Mumbai,” they added.
