Building Collapse In Madikeri Leaves Five Injured

Madikeri, June 21: A tragic incident unfolded in Gonikoppa, Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu district, as a 72-year-old building housing the ‘Ambur Dum Biriyani hotel’ collapsed suddenly on Thursday afternoon at 2 pm. Six individuals were initially trapped under the debris, including the hotel owner, his family members, a worker, and customers.

Swift response from fire and emergency services personnel, police, and an NDRF team led to the successful rescue of all six individuals. Five of them sustained injuries and were promptly treated at a nearby hospital. The injured include the hotel owner N Tirumurugan (60), his wife Alamelamma (46), their son Narayana (24), worker Mahalinga (25), and customer Madhu (35).

The building, known to be in a dilapidated condition, also housed a meat shop owned by someone named Samir. The collapse occurred suddenly, prompting immediate evacuation efforts by those inside the building.

The rescue operation, involving specialized equipment from Mysuru for cutting through debris, was a joint effort by fire and emergency services teams from Mysuru, Piriyapattana, Madikeri, and Gonikoppa, along with support from the NDRF.

Authorities, including Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja and Superintendent of Police K Ramarajan, visited the site to oversee the rescue operations and assess the situation. The incident serves as a stark reminder for residents to exercise caution around old and deteriorating buildings.
