In response to a report by TNIE concerning the illegal felling of trees within the Padinalkunadu Reserve Forest area of Mundrott Forest Range near Talacauvery Sanctuary in Kodagu, Forest Minister Eshwar Kandre has initiated a probe into the matter. The report, published on May 11, shed light on the unauthorized tree felling, with allegations raised by members of the Kodagu Ekikarana Forum during their visit to the site.

The forum members accused foresters of involvement in the incident, where thousands of trees were unlawfully felled and subsequently burnt. Notably, the forest minister was made aware of the situation following the publication of TNIE’s report.

An order issued on May 15 highlighted the failure to alert the minister’s office despite the significant tree felling within the reserve forest zone. It was only after the report was circulated in the Whatsapp group of the state forest department that the minister was apprised of the situation, prompting swift action to launch a thorough investigation into the matter.
