Chikkamagaluru: Apart from filling the pockets of contractors in the name of development of Dantaramakki lake and Kotekere in the City, the development of the lake has become a mirage. Therefore the work should be stopped or else we will launch legal battle said Farmers’ Association District President Gurushantappa.
Addressing a press conference here, he said that the water level has already been reduced by constructing a mound in the middle of the lake. “The lake is now being re-filled with soil to reduce the extent of the lake,” he alleged.
“Lake development means the removal of the silt and repairing the weakened ridges and holes to increase the water flow and prevent leakage of water. But now the water level is being reduced by pouring soil into the courtyard of the lake. He complained that the lake was being added to the Minor Irrigation Department by the Cauvery Irrigation Corporation and the Tourism Department and money is being wasted in the name of development,” he alleged.
“In the summer, water has to be stored in the lake to keep the City cool. It is not right to destroy the environment in the name of beauty and the amount spent so far on the works of the lake should be disclosed,” he urged.
“If the work is not stopped, the legal fight will continue,” he said.
Former President M. C. Basavaraj and General Secretary M. D. Mahesh were present on the occasion.
