Encounters cannot curb Maoists: Annamalai

k annamalaiChikkamagaluru: Though Maoist activities have not resurfaced in the region, there is news of certain groups having visited certain areas of the district.

However, outgoing SP K Annamalai has said that the visits of Maoists and their activities are two different aspects.

“Based on their visits we cannot conclude that their activities are on. However, having said that we need to also understand that if such visits continue, then the activities too may begin,” he said adding that to prevent the activities, attention has to be paid towards changing the mindset of the people.

Annamalai, while pressing for providing more and more infrastructure facilities to people in the Maoist infested areas, said that encounters can never be the solution to fight Maoists because the ideology persists and new recruits keep coming in.

“We need to convince and change the mindsets of the people so that they do not get carried away by the Maoist ideology. When recruitment stops, the activities too will end,” he said while interacting with reporters of the district.

Talking about the existing situation in the department in Chikkamagaluru, he said that not many opt to work here in Chikkamagaluru due to lack of facilities. Hence several posts are vacant. “Most of the headquarters are located outside this district. For example, if we have to discuss the National Highway, we would have to go to Hasan. A lot needs to be done in this regard,” he said.

Press Club President Dinesh Patwardhan while praising the tough police officer for his style of working, urged him to stay in touch with the people of the district.
