Chikkamagaluru: The forest department has finally put a break on “thinning” of teakwood trees without permission in the district.
The district forest officials in the name of “thinning” had felled several valuable trees in the plantations much to the opposition of environmentalists and like-minded organisations.
Following opposition, the higher officials have directed their staff to submit a detailed report on the thinning process.
The locals alleged that due to pressure from political leaders and timber mafia, the officials have gone ahead with destroying the forest.
The state government had granted Rs 5 Crore for the thinning of the trees in Chikkamagaluru and nearby areas. It has been a huge relief to the locals and environmentalists since the higher officials have stopped thinning work in the name of development.
