Chikmagalur: The Chikmagalur First District and Sessions Court has remanded Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Arjun for 14 days judicial custody on Thursday September 2.
It is said that PSI Arjun allegedly made an accused drink urine when he was working as SHO in Ginibeedu Police Station in Mudigere taluk. According to the reports, PSI Arjun arrested a Dalit youth Punith for allegedly making a call to a woman in the village. On May 21, the PSI forced Punit to drink urine when he asked for water.
When the incident came to light various Dalit organisations staged protest, and the action of sub inspector drew flak across the State. Later the higher officers ordered to register case against PSI.
Based on the complaint filed by Punit, the Gonibeedu Police registered a case against PSI Arjun under sections of the IPC related to wrongful confinement, causing hurt, torture, wrongful confinement to extort a confession, besides the provisions under the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities). Soon after case was registered PSI absconded. The accused also submitted bail applications before courts which was rejected.
The State Government handed over the case to COD. On September 1, COD officers arrested the accused Arjun, produced him before the court on September 2. The court sent him for judicial custody for 14 days.
