Chikkamagalur: As many as five industrial units functioning in violation of rules and regulation, thereby causing huge losses to state exchequer were shut down by local Gram Panchayat President and Development Officer at Tegur on Saturday.

The officials during the raid in Gavanahalli sealed Venkateshwara saw mills, Eshwar saw mills, Nanda saw mills, chemical and plywood units for gross violation of property rules and duty evasion.

These units were sealed because they were constructed in 5 acre pasture bearing survey numbers 115,116 and 117. The land was not converted for industrial purpose.
The units had not obtained sanction for building plan and evaded GP revenue and building tax for many years. The loss calculated by the authorities amounts to Rs 1.1 crores which include Rs 40 lakh duties due to Tegur GP , Rs 20 lakhs to Chikkamagalur Zilla panchayath, Rs 30 lakhs to City Muncipal Council and Rs 20 lakhs to Karnataka electricity board .

The authorities found hundreds of workers employed in these units with few child labourers from north eastern states of Tripura and Assam. They noticed that the employees were not paid their salaries for months and hence mercilessly shut down five industrial units .
