Chikkamagaluru: A wild elephant attacked a coffee farm in Aldur on the morning of Sunday March 27, killing a woman migrant worker and seriously injuring another.
According to sources, the deceased migrant worker has been identified as Sarojabai (45) whereas the injured has been identified as Duggappa.
The employees were plucking peppercorns from the creepers on the trees when they were attacked. The lone tusker attacked the workers and threw them to the ground without warning. The woman suffered serious injuries as a result of the fall and died in the hospital.
The screams of the woman were mistaken for monkey screams by other workers who were working in different parts of the plantation. They only found out about the attack after the Sarojabhai’s child reached them and told about it.
By the time they reached to save her, the woman had been trampled by the elephant.
The man-animal conflict has allegedly increased in the district in recent years. Elephant herds attack the plantation regularly, destroying crops. Atleast four people have died in pachyderm attacks in the last 3 to 4 years. Villagers claimed that repeated requests for a solution to the problems to the concerned authorities had gone unanswered.
According to sources, a case has been registered in Aldur Police Station about the wild animal attack.
